The Clock Tower or Torre dell'Orologio was built during the Renaissance in 1496. The Tower marks the main entrance to the shopping area or Mercerie of St. Mark's Square. This is the world's first digital clock with the time changing every five minutes by the numbers flipping. The clock is topped with two bronze men, Moors, who swing their clappers every hour without stop since 1496. In fact in the 17th century, one of the Moors knocked off an unsuspecting worker right off the top to his death.
Happy Birthday Todd! He ordered canolis for his cake. Couldn't think of a better place or better people to spend it with.
In the Piazza at 11:00 at night. Todd and I went to dinner at 8:00 and thought it was going to be a quiet night. We forgot that people don't come out until 10:00 p.m. The square was extra crowded this night because Italy was playing England in the quarter-finals of the Euro Cup. Everywhere you turn, Italians are glued to the flatscreens watching the game in all the restaurants. Big Blue won! We don't know why, but Italy has always had blue uniforms and are called The Azuris.
I made the girls go out and look at the square. It was midnight and they were already in their P.J.'s... shh, don't tell Rick Steve we brought them.
