June 21: Day trip to Pisa. We hoped on the train for a quick ride to Pisa, most famous for its leaning tower. The tower is actually a campanile, a free standing bell tower located in the beautiful Tuscan town of Pisa on the banks of the Arno River.

The Piazza dei Miracoli, called Cathedral Square, in Piazza del Duomo dates back to the 1100's.

The Battistero di San Giovanni, or Baptistry of St. John, began construction in 1152 and lasted 200 years. It is the largest baptistry in Italy. The walls you see behind the baptistry are the original city walls and predate the 1100's.
A view from the base of The Leaning Tower of Pisa.
The kids and I waiting our turn to climb the tower. Once you got there, you bought tickets to climb up. They only allow 25 people at a time every twenty minutes to climb. The usual wait can be two hours.
The ceiling of the cathedral. Those are all reliefs of flowers in bronze. All the yellow metal work is bronze along the whole length of the ceiling of the cathedral. This is in the center.
