This is St. Peter's tomb, the Apostle Peter. Across from where he is buried is the spot where he was cruficied. Bernini's alter and seven-story-tall bronze canopy cover the sight of his bones. You are able to go below ground and pass by it, but photos are not allowed. This was as close as we could get. You see his name in latin in the inscription. I don't know why it is sideways, but tilt your head and you can read.
